WEST ALLIS WEST LIONS CLUB – HISTORY

Our club was chartered as a "Noon Club" on Wednesday, February 20, 1974 with it’s first organizational meeting called to order by Past Lion President Joe Dragon of the sponsoring West Allis Lions Club. PDG Herb Velser gave the invocation. Lion James Wenzel, State of Wisconsin Lions Secretary, was among the twenty-two dignitaries attending this meeting. Thirty Three names were accepted for charter membership into the Club at this meeting.

"WEST ALLIS WEST LIONS CLUB" was chosen as the club name. Lion PDG Herb Velser designed the Club Logo. In 1978, Lions Mark Ellington and Henry Clasen, using the Club Logo, designed the Club Pin with an initial order for 500 pins. In 1979, Lion Mark Ellington enlarged the size and ordered an additional 1,000. The Club Pins were sold to Club members and other Lions at Zone meetings, District and State Convention. More recently, new members are presented with a club pin at their installation. The Club slogan, "Best Brand in the West" was established based on the Club Logo of a Horse drawn covered wagon, branded with the "Lions International Pin". Of course the Club always uses the "Lions International" motto "WE SERVE", as its number one motto and goal. In the early 1990's, the Club presented a new pin entitled the "Excalibur".  The pin was designed to illustrate the Excalibur Automobile, custom manufactured in the City of West Allis for many years.

The Tyrolean Towne House was selected as the Club meeting place with meeting times set for the 1st and 3rd Thursday’s of each month between the hours of 12:15 PM and 1:30 PM. No club meetings are held during the months of July and August. (Board meetings are held however and usually hosted by one of the club members). The meeting place was moved to "Steak House 100" on the corner of Hwy 100 and Greenfield , when the Tyrolen was sold and became the "Pallas" Restaurant. We met there until the property was sold in 1998 to become a "Walgreen's Pharmacy". We then moved to "State Fair Inn" at S. 81st. St. and W. Greenfield Ave.

Our Club abides by the Constitution and By-Laws of the Lions of Wisconsin and is revised annually at the Lions State Convention and in accordance with the Rules of Order.

In the second year of our Charter, we sponsored the Charter of the "West Allis Central Lions Club" with the help of Lion Joe Dragon, PDG Herb Velser, and Lion Len Szudy.  In 1982 our Club sponsored the West Allis West Leo Club under the guidance of Lions Ellington and John Scheets.  Leos Club offers leadership, experience and opportunity to the youth of our Community.

It has been an established Club practice to participate in, and host District activities including Zone meetings, Bowling and Golf. Many of our members have been members of the District Cabinet as well as State activities. Our members have also participated in State and International Conventions.

The clubs first major fund raising project was the "Pizza Sale". This project entailed much physical labor and was quite profitable. Since then, our Club has been involved in Raffles, Western Days, Pancake Breakfasts, Las Vegas Nights, Lion Skate-a-thon, West Allis Sidewalk Days, White Cane Days, Bingo, Rose Sales, Calendar Raffle and a number or other fundraising and service projects. One of the more recent and more rewarding service projects has been the distribution of Christmas gifts purchased by the Club, to the residents of "Allis Care Center" and "Mitchell Manor", nursing homes located in West Allis.

Lions Dan Christianson and Mark Ellington organized the "CLUB CLOWNS". Their first public appearance was at the 1979 Lion Skate-A-Thon and then in the 4th of July parade. Lion Jim Morateck "Morty" was the next addition. Lion Jerry Amerpohl was the next club member to be added and during the summer, Lion John Scheets and Roger Otto joined the group making a total of six clowns in all. In 1980, the Club purchased a "Fire Engine" that was used by the Clowns in their skit and public appearances. The "CLOWNS" were an excellent addition to the Club and were highly accepted by the membership and public. The existence of the "CLOWNS" ended in the early 1990's. The "Fire Engine" was sold a short time later.

Our club has donated a substantial number of dollars over the years to many deserving individuals and charitable organizations. These organizations include: LCIF, WLF, Bold, Leader Dog, Sight First, Lions Camp and many other Local, State, National and International causes.
